Before email addresses became a fad ‘@’ was used to abbreviate ‘at the rate of’ especially in the business world.
For instance, “Murdock bought one million shares in the company @ $25 per stock”
Of course, since email addresses have taken over the world the same symbol is used between the user name and the domain name.
