The term originally, of course, meant being in the very front of the “charge into battle”. We use the term today in any sense where we want to say somebody or some group is in the forefront of a particular move in a certain direction. Something which those people feel is vitally important and they are the motivating force calling for others to follow in their footsteps to be a part of this particular endeavor. They are showing, and leading the way.
