What does it mean when there’s a [sic] after a bit of writing?

Do you ever read something, and at the end of a paragraph, there’s a [sic]? What does that mean? That has always bugged me!

It means that the word of phrase infront of it is either spelled wrong or used wrong gramatically. It is only used when someone is copying something that someone else wrote.

It means “thus” or this is the way it was written in the original text. It is usually used to indicate a mistake in the original which the author has reproduced as is.

The witness wrote, ‘We couldn’t get him to talk proply [sic] when we found him.’

(It means “We know the spelling is wrong but that’s the way the witness spelt it.”)

(sic): Latin: thus; so (not a mistake and is to be read as it stands)

It’s Latin for so or thus. It means you’re quoting someone exactly and the mistake is not yours.
