A few years ago, thousands of start-up companies collectively sunk billions of dollars into companies doing business primarily on the web with ‘dot-com’ in their names. Needless to say, the growing bubble finally burst, causing most of these companies to go belly up. So ‘dot-com’ has come to mean, investing too much in an idea that is bound to fail.

Something ill-conceived, faddish, and madly gotten on board with by overly optimistic entrepreneurs only to quickly lose their collective bottoms; a pig in a poke and a bird in the bush.
