A charley horse is a North American term only.

The term Charley Horse is commonly used to describe leg/foot cramping.

Two possible origins of the term.

The term may date back to American baseball slang of the 1880s, possibly from the pitcher Charley “Old Hoss” Radbourn who is said to have suffered from cramps.

OR

Another story mentions a horse named Charley that used to work at Comiskey Park, the Chicago White Sox’ ballpark in Chicago. In those days, an old, perhaps lame, retired horse was often called “Charley”.

Leg cramps (“Charlie horse”) are painful Muscle Spasms in the legs that usually occur at night. Dehydration, excessive exercise, and use of diuretic (“water pills”) medications may trigger or worsen leg cramps.
