Discourse is a discussion or a debate, but in literature, it’s generally not between two or more people — it’s one side of an argument. One writer gives exposition on theories or ideas or discoveries or events. There’s not much “back-and-forth,” but the writing to be an incredibly long justification of something the writer caused, believes, witnessed, or took part in. Most literary discourses tend to be incredibly boring as they are more often than not self-serving by nature.

Understanding a spiritual subject on the basis of: books- reading, knowing and logical self analysis discourses- general listening, knowing and logical self analysis gurus- personalised learning, knowing and logical self analysis All the above may be factual, but, such understanding can not be termed as ‘ True ‘. Such understanding are called bookish/theoretical The understanding based on experiencing the knowledge by going through the mill alone can be called ‘True’ in the real sense. To see a simple example, let us imagine a person who has never tasted sweetness in his life. Suppose a person tells him, sugar is sweet. The knowledge he imparts is true. But it is not true knowledge, as he can not really appreciate that as he has never tasted sweetness so far. After imparting that knowledge if he is given a spoon of sugar for him to eat and realise what sweetness is the understanding he gets is the True one! The Scriptures themselves say, Abhyaasam (learning), Dhyaanam (mental recall), Nidhidhyaasanam (constant brooding over the logic), Anubhavam (doing saadhana and realisation) and swanubhavam (metabolisation of knowledge in every aspect of Self) as the proper successive means for learning.
