ante meridian and post meridian. Meridian (Prime Meridian) being the line that marks noon , ante = before, post = after

Both are abbreviations of Latin phrases Meridian is taken as 12 noon or midday..AM is short for ante meridian or the hours before ,12 noon .Like wise hours from noon until 12 midnight are PM or post meidian.
