I think you mean a ‘run for their money’ which is a statement mostly used when stating something, like a product for example comes out and might be as good or better than the competitor’s product. But this is used in a very wide range.
An example would be to say that Xbox 360 is giving PS3 a run for their money.
It’s also used in other contexts such as saying that chick from Transformers gives Jessica Alba a run for her money. Referring to looks of course.
