I was taught in Catholic school, it meant before Christ’s Birth and AD meant After His Birth.

I found this on a website:

The term B.C. (Before Christ) refers to time measured before the birth of Jesus Christ. A.D., probably introduced about 1,500 years ago, is an abbreviation of the Latin words “anno Domini,” or “in the year of our Lord.” A.D. refers to time measured after the year of Jesus Christ’s birth, starting with the year zero. Contemporary alternatives to these terms are B.C.E. (Before the Common Era) and C.E. (Common Era); the term “Common Era” itself is a modern version of the older term “Christian Era.”

B.C. are events before the time of Christ (or before christ BC) AD is anno domini which actually means in the year of our Lord. AD meaning after death was not widely accepted or put into use until several centuries after Jesus’ death. Part of the main purpose of the BC / AD dating system was to make the birth of Jesus Christ the dividing point of world history. However, when the B.C. / A.D. system was being calculated, they actually made a mistake in pinpointing the year of Jesus’ birth. Scholars later discovered that Jesus was actually born in around 4-6 BC, not 0 AD. The birth, life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Christ are the “turning points” in world history. It is fitting, therefore, that Jesus Christ be the separation of “old” and “new.” BC was “before Christ” and since His birth, we have been living “in the year of our Lord.” Philippians 2:10-11-

B.C. means Before Christ.

A.D. stands for Anno Domini, which is Latin, meaning “Year of our Lord”.

So, our reckoning of years is centered on the birth of Jesus Christ. Some try to avoid recognizing that by replacing A.D. with C.E., for Common Era, and B.C. with B.C.E., for Before Common Era.

Before Christ and Anno Domini, (in the year of our lord)

Only one man hit history with such an impact that he divided it into two parts. Thereafter history would be divided into the time before his Birth, and the time after his Death.

bc means before christ but is now called bce (before common era)

ad means ano domini “in the year of our lord” but is now called ce (common era)

these are all based on jesus’ birth with the time after jesus’ birth being ce and before being bce
