What can I use instead of “gasp in shock”?

I use “gasp” too much I think in this story I’m writing. I was thinking of gape but it doesnt sound right because its more like gawking, open mouthed. Anyone know another phrase for gasping in fear?

i draw my breath in horror.

My breath catches in my throat

i exhale deliriously

my breath betrays my surprise

my mind recoils; my breath contracts, expands, labours

my throat hisses my uncertainty

exhalation in turmoil escapes my livid lung, and pulses of distracted air burst in rough pockets to reveal the crumbling facade of my bastion certainty.

AAAaaaah, i say

from my core emerges air, uncalm and pained

i gasp in shock

thankyou, that was a a fun game.

peace.

How about “Reeling in sheer terror” or “Asphyxsiated by the foul stench of death” or ” Agape in whitehaired horror” I could probably think of a few more but I hope these will help.
