Ottava rima is a rhyming stanza form of Italian origin. Originally used for long poems on heroic themes, it also came to be popular in the writing of mock-heroic works. Its earliest known use is in the writings of Giovanni Boccaccio.

Some examples of this form of writing are the Teseide (1340) and the Filostrato (1347) by Boccaccio. John Hookham Frere (1817 poem Whistlecraft). The most famous ottava rima poem was Don Juan by George Gordon Byron.

From Frere’s Whistlecraft:

But chiefly, when the shadowy moon had shed

O’er woods and waters her mysterious hue,

Their passive hearts and vacant fancies fed

With thoughts and aspirations strange and new,

Till their brute souls with inward working bred

Dark hints that in the depths of instinct grew

Subjection not from Locke’s associations,

Nor David Hartley’s doctrine of vibrations.

From Byron’s Don Juan:

“Go, little book, from this my solitude!

I cast thee on the waters – go thy ways!

And if, as I believe, thy vein be good,

The world will find thee after many days.”

When Southey ‘s read, and Wordsworth understood,

I can’t help putting in my claim to praise –

The four first rhymes are Southey’s every line:

For God’s sake, reader! take them not for mine.

I just popped in for a moment to see all the beautiful examples of Best In Show and the examples of the “Best in Show” Challenged, so to speak. Then I see the APBT expert (BreeanaK…) being a DOWNER!!!!! @breeanak….If you know so much about the breed you would know as Rogue stated they have “dual” registration and what she did NOT state, if it was or was not an AKC dog! Second, I do not see you posting pics of any breed, Ms. AKC know it all. It is easy to sit back and be judgmental, which some might think I am doing right now, but I am not! I just know your breed of choice and the pics you would display would put me to shame, so I will gracefully bow out! And next time you want to call someone out on something, especially when it is their BBQ, it would behoove you to post it as a question within your answer, or click on their email link. You know like how I should have done for you! My job is done here and I must go now! Sorry to intrude Rogue!

This type of poem is called an OttavaRima.

The Blessing Of Praise

Although skies may loom darkly overhead,

and sorrows can produce such cloudy days,

in pondering this case it must be said

that God is still worthy of our praise!

And whether we have joy or pain or dread;

storm showers or the sun’s inviting rays,

whatever we’re called to drink from life’s cup,

in adoration, lift the Saviour up!

Don’t let perceptions become heavy bands

that bind your spirit and incarcerate.

Break forth in worship. Lift up holy hands.

God is still on the throne, and He is great!

If no longer in bondage to sin’s demands,

in His service you’re blessed to participate.

The praise that you offer, dear saint, is a key

to help some poor soul who yearns to be free.

Perhaps it is time to do a self check

if you’re hindered from praising the Lord;

and pick yourself up by the scruff of the neck.

Put God back in place, let Him be adored.

When on His goodness you truly reflect,

you’ll heap as much praise as you can afford

and as in true worship, you overflow

you’ll bless God, self and others more than you know!

I don’t believe in the sentiments of the poem but it is a good example of an ottava rima

Very interesting Question,I didn’t know what ottava rima was but now I am reading up on it. Thanks for asking it =)

ottava rima

Italian stanza form composed of eight 11-syllable lines, rhyming abababcc. It originated in the late 13th and early 14th centuries and was established by Giovanni Boccaccio as the standard form for Italian epic and narrative verse.

Examples

“Go, little book, from this my solitude!

I cast thee on the waters – go thy ways!

And if, as I believe, thy vein be good,

The world will find thee after many days.”

When Southey ‘s read, and Wordsworth understood,

I can’t help putting in my claim to praise –

The four first rhymes are Southey’s every line:

For God’s sake, reader! take them not for mine.
