What are the advantages?

What are the advantages of writing in first person versus third person? What about the disadvantages? When is thrid person better? When is first person better?

Don’t worry- this isn’t a school assignment. I have a story in my head but I can’t decide whether to make it third person or first person. If it makes any difference, it’s a love story. And don’t criticize me for that. lol

It is very difficult to make a first person account come out well. Go to a bookstore and note how many successful books are written in first person.

really it depends on the story. If you are writing in first person it is because you want the reader to be in the place of that person, an equal. If you write in third person it is like watching from someplace else, i’ve heard it been called the God view. In third person it isn’t always as easy to show what the character is feeling, or thinking, but it will not make the reader share the biase/hate or whatever that the character as easily as first person.

The advantage of 1st over 3rd is that you can speak of the protagonist’s thoughts and emotions with more authority.

The advantage of 3rd over 1st is that you are not limited to the experience of the protagonist. You can go places he/she can’t. e.g. “meanwhile, back at the ranch,”
