Try not to restate a point already brought up, yet if you need to to further that point or to connect it to another idea. Then it is best to insert something along the lines of ” as above mentioned.” or “as mentioned above.” “As previously developed..” then do a short tit bit of what you already stated and connect it to your next idea, or further it.

Ex.

Dogs can make great pets. They are loyal trustworthy, and a great companion….more writing more writing.. Dogs, are great, as I already mentioned, and how can you argue, with a title like ” mans best friend.”

I know that isn’t good but its all I could think of off the top of my head, but your will most likely be writing about novels, and this is what I did during school to help.

Oh, and I can tell in your question you were trying to make it sound more formal with the use of the -, try not to use things, it is hard to think of another word, but it really hinders your writing, and cutting back words also helps get right to the point which enhances your writing.
