Back in the day cooking pots and kettles were made of cast iron. They were both black. A kettle and a pot were pretty much the same thing. A deep vessel used for cooking. Usually you use this phrase on someone who is the same by nature as the person they are are commenting on. (For example, someone who has really crooked teeth saying that Steve Buscemi should never have been and actor because his teeth are crooked.)
I have always heard it in the negative question form, though “Well isn’t that the pot calling the kettle black?!”
But they mean the same thing really…and one other variation I have started hearing lately is
“Okay, Kettle”

This saying means that you’re accusing someone of a fault that you yourself have. A pot is black. So is a kettle. So a pot calling the kettle black would be hypocritical.
