A dash can be used anywhere you would use a comma. The misuse of a dash is to place it where you wouldn’t put a comma.

If the hallway has a sign that says no running and you dash down the hallway then you are breaking the rules, and therefore misusing your ability to dash.

“Proper use of the dash in writing helps to convey the precise message.”

There’s also one on using hyphens.

It doesn’t tell how you would misuse one. Rather it states how they are used.

The following web site contains the most common grammar, usage, and style errors in print today.

“Also, be careful not to misuse the dash in place of a comma or colon (in typing two unspaced hyphens represent a dash).”

You could mis-use it! Putting it in the incorrect place in a word would be misuse!

Unnecessary hyphenations would be one… For example saying “mis-spell” instead of misspell.
