If you want to at least hone your skills, do the Cryptiquote in the paper every day

If you could memorize the alphabet in order by usage, it might help. I learned it as a kid (from a kid’s code book of some sort) and now can only remember E, T, A, I, S, O, N… but that usually gets the job done.
Pretty soon you learn to look for combinations. A 3-letter word that ends in 2 of the same letter is PROBABLY either All or Too. And if a 4-letter word has the same letter as 2nd and 4th, it’s probably “here”. That sort of thing.
A couple hints for Enigma Device — sometimes it’s not a direct exchange between 2 letters. Sometimes you must substitute one letter for another, and then the 2nd one needs to be substituted again. And sometimes they choose quotes or paragraphs that deliberately avoid the most commonly used letters. I got ” ‘Twas brillig and the slithy toves…” once. But that apostrophe at the beginning was a dead giveaway.
Hang in there. You’ll pick it up.
