Native speakers, which do you think is a correct sentence?

1.A knife and fork was used in the Edo period(ie.from 1603 to 1868).

2.A knife and fork were used in the Edo period.

This is a question posted on Yahoo!Japan Answers(知恵袋).

I hope every native speaker will help him.Thank you all.

Knife and fork make up a plural subject so WERE is correct.

Don’t count on “Native speakers” to always be correct. Native speakers are notoriously bad at their own native grammar.

Probably 90% of them would say “Come to the store with Jim and I” when the PROPER grammar is “Come to the store with Jim and me”
