Mum or Mom?

Ok Americans have Mom and Australians have Mum.. why do you think they are spelt differently when the two countries are sort of simular? (please dont take that offensivily..lol).

mum or mummy, is used in the UK & parts of Canada (especially Eastern Canada), Australia, and New Zealand;

mom or mommy, in most of North America (especially the U.S.). Mommy is considered baby talk. Most adults in these regions switch to the term mom as they approach the teen years. This term is also used in the British West Midlands.

colour, gray, mom – merely how i became taught. In grade college we had “colour” on the spelling attempt. mom had a e book no longer from right here and that they spelled it colour – so on the attempt it is the way I spelled it – and have been given it incorrect. no longer basic I say.
