Is this grammar correct? ” Lets take a listen”?

This is always said on MSNBC and CNN but I found it wrong

My Webster’s desktop dictionary says that the word ‘listen’ can be used as a noun (meaning ‘a listening’) so I guess it’s OK. Apparently it’s a new spin on the expression “take a look” which is common enough.

Well first, I think it should be “let’s” not “lets”. You have two word contracted into one. “Lets” would imply “allows”.

The users on MSNBC and CNN were not referring to callers. They use this all the time to go on to a clip or other news item, even when no sound is involved. I believe it is grammatically incorrect. You can take a look, yes, but I don’t agree you can take a listen. If they meant “we are all going to take a minute to listen to what is being said.”, then why don’t they just say that? Or just simply “let’s listen”?

Just backing up cinderblock, because he’s absolutely right.

Listen, while usually a verb, can also be a noun. We can “look” but we can also “take a look”. We “sniff” but we also could “take a sniff”. In the same manner, one can both “listen”, “have a listen”, “take a listen”, and so on.

It needs to be spelled “Let’s” because that is short for “Let us”. The entire sentence itself is a figure of speech which means “we are all going to take a minute to listen to what is being said.”

Technically not correct since listen isn’t a noun so you really can’t take it anywhere. Should be “Let’s listen.” or “Let’s listen to this.” or similar.

I stand corrected. You actually can learn something on YA.

Perhaps they said: “Let’s take a listener”…maybe the listeners are calling the show…The word “listen” is a verb…so the phrase sounds incorrect…I think…
