The English word “star” derives ultimately from the ancient Greek word “αστήρ” (aster). I can’t find an etymology that traces it back to the Persian, but the Persian and the Greek do bear a great deal of similarity. In linguistics, words that sound alike and mean the same thing almost always indicate a common root. It may not be that the Greek word derived from the Persian, but rather that both derived from a common origin.

Very likely. Mr.perfesser doesn’t know if it is Persian or Indian, but Persian and Indian languages are members of the Indo-European family of languages (you could look it up), and therefore are related to each other and to English, if only distantly. They all have many words that can be traced ultimately back to Sanskrit roots. In this case, given the similarity in sound, it is very likely that the words are related.

I dont know whether it relates to Persian word, but it definitely relates to Urdu and Hindi word(which again relates to the origin of Sanskrit) “Sitareh” which means stars.
