Is it the phonetic alphabet:…. R U i.e. are you? …. N e. any? … if so …..?

What R (are) the complete words? Sometime back read its now in common usage and easy to use / decipher!

Can inded write a whole letter with it? Wouldn’t mind using it here on answeres as I’m sure it would generate a lot of interest – aspecially for those who can’t spell all that well!

Is there a complete listing covering the alphabet ?

The phonetic alphabet is a set of symbols, some resembling the alphabet, some not, that are used to give the sound of a word. If you as an English speaker want to know how a word sounds in say Inuit, or Chinese you can pronounce it if it is written phonetically and you know phonetics.

What you’ve written above are short forms used in text messages. People do this in other languages also. For example in Italian the word “che”[which, that ] sounds like the letter k. So sometimes they just the letter.

Alpa, Bravo, Delta etc is used if you are spelling something over the telephone and want to be sure the person gets the letters correct…

so three different things-

Those who can’t spell that well would do well to learn rather than using r u etc http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newspeak

I think the phonetic alphabet is where the first letter of a word represents the intended letter as used in the military eg

Alpha = a

Bravo = b

Charlie =c

Zulu = z

etc etc

The phonetic alphabet is an alphabet of SOUNDS and not of letters : it’s [a], which is a sound… [u] another one, etc….. And you pronounce it the same way wathever your native tongue is.

R for are is just an easier way to write things fast…
