Is “I got punished for stealing the car” proper grammar?
I realize “I was punished” is the passive tense, but is ” Igot” simply coloquial?

Basically it’s colloquial as you expressed. There is nothing wrong with the sentence. π

Whether you “got” or “were” punished, it’s still the passive voice (not tense), and they’re both acceptable English. The active voice is usually preferable, but in that case you’d have to identify the punisher: ____ punished me.

I got is simply bad grammar. then again in the proper context it could work..as the past tense of I get. In that sentence it just seems wrong.

nope, it’s not colloquial. got is Proper English. remember the four tenses of get? get (present); getting (present participle); got (past); have/had gotten (past participle).
then put them in the sentence and it makes perfect sense.
i will get a punishment for stealing the car.
i am getting punished for stealing the car.
i got a punishment (punished) for stealing the car.
i have gotten a punishment (punished) for stealing the car.
got it? π
