It means that you have a look that says ‘ dont f””’k with me ‘ he can tell you are not a weak woman. He obviously knows the type to prey on and looks for the weak ones. I have been told I look like a cop or act like one which is basically the same thing – told this by women and guys before from time to time.

your antenae is up and you look long range – you keep yourself covered. When I am around abusive people – gangs – thugs – teenagers – I have the look and they know not to bother. It is a way of protecting yourself and letting others know what you are without saying anything. When you want to make things closer then just smile and be soft a little. Be aware of that hard stare and you do not want to use it on the people you want to be closer to

War veterans, particularly Vietnam Vets, and former victims of abuse, eg, POWs, are often said to have a “thousand yard stare”. Meaning a haunted, post-traumatic look. I think your random guy was giving you a backhanded compliment. Either he doesn’t know what he’s saying or he’s a jerk.

only place I ve heard the phrase was in reference to someone who appears to be mentally focused on something other than the reality around them. You see it in people deep in thought about something. Another phrase that is similar is telling someone “Earth to , come in ” or, “Hey, where did you go a minute ago, you clearly weren t here”
