I don’t pretend to know why?
What does this mean, I just can’t figure it out.
“I know you’ve been melancholy lately. I don’t pretend to know why.”
Thanks!

Somebody thinks you’ve been sad lately and they don’t know why. Sounds like someone wants to see why you are sad and if they can do anything to cheer you up.

The statement “I don’t pretend to know why” can stand alone. It would mean the same thing in most contexts.
It means “I don’t know why.”
It is kind of a sarcastic or wordy way to say “I haven’t a clue.”

Let me break this down…
I think it means that the person saying this is aware that you’re not alright.. and if they like ask you “What’s wrong?” and you say “Nothing…” they’re not going to find that acceptable and they just want to know what’s up and they care for you.
Idk, just a guess.
I think too much.

who ever is talking knows that the person they are talking to is depressed, and they are saying that they can’t know why they are upset until that person tells them, but they do honestly care and want to help.
at least that is how i would interpret it.
