I am having to move after being in the same room for at least 10 years, to a much smaller classroom?

There really is little storage space. In my present room I have a walk in closet, large book cases, hooks for coats, a TV mounted on additonal shelves, a long computer table and more. In the new room which is almost half the size of my present one, the Tv is on a cart, no hooks for coats/bookbags, little shelving, etc. Any ideas for storage or compacting.

start purging! anything you haven’t used in the last 2 years, toss it! that’s what i’ve been starting to do…i’ve only taught for 5 years and i realized i was just collecting too much junk…sell or give away the things you don’t need…i’m sure there’s a new teacher out there who would love your stuff…

as far as bookbags, i don’t know how your situation is, but i have my students put their backpacks outside the classroom along the wall…saves up tons of space inside…

First, I suggest purging before moving. Go through your things, and get rid of (trash or pass on to another teacher) anything you haven’t used in the past year. If the material is for a different grade or subject that you think you might teach and some point and you LOVE the resource, box it up and store it at home for later.

Second, think up. You can buy shelves that mount on the wall and install hooks. Get bookshelves with height. Buy or collect containers to hold your manipulatives, art supplies, paper, etc. as it keeps your room looking less cluttered. If you live near an Ikea, there are many great ideas for living and working in a small space.

Finally, here’s a site I ran into the other day which has MANY good ideas for organizing materials AND includes pictures. It’s an elementary classroom (I teach secondary), but I got a lot of great ideas from this lady:

This one is also pretty good:

Good luck! Personalize your space and make it feel like YOU!

You may want to see what home Depot or Lowes has in the way of storage cabinets. I had to do this several years ago when I had to move out into a portable. I found that if it has doors, then children are less likely to open them. JMHO
