Sometimes they are actions, while other times they are states of being. An easy way to tell is to ask yourself, “Is the subject performing the action?”
For example:
You look sad. (Are you ‘looking’? No. It’s not an action, but a state.)
You look at me. (Are you ‘looking’? Yes. It’s an action.)
Soooo….
The breeze feels warm.
The music sounds soothing.
The chicken tastes delicious.
The children grow wise.
The dog remained calm.
The horizon appears flat.
The trash smelled nauseating.
The temperature stayed high all day.
The angel turned evil.
The dog looked sick.
(You’ll notice that the verbs as linking verbs are always followed by an adjective.) =-)
