How does one pronounce “gigawatt”?

My two science profs can not agree: one says it “gigawatt” and one says “jigawatt”. They both swear that the other pronounciation is a “common error”… which is right? Or are both acceptable?

PS: This has NOTHING to do with the Back to the Future debate…

I have always pronounced it with a g but when I went on http://www.thefreedictionary.com/gigawatt they pronounced it with a j. I think that either would be acceptable and everyone would understand you.

I’ve always heard it pronounced as with the “g” sound rather than the “j” sound. However, that may be a function of which side of the Atlantic you’re on. I’m American; it sort of sounds like the “j” sound might be a British pronunciation – just a hunch. Maybe the “jigawatt” professor is from outside the U.S.? πŸ™‚

It doesn’t matter until they start using Sodium Bicorbonate + Acetic Acid In Eachother’s Lab Experiment.(Chuckles Gently!) it’s probably “G” not “J”.

I’ve always said it with the hard “g”. I don’t think there is a right or wrong pronunciation.

Wenzday…who in the world actually says “wed-nes-day out” loud. You can say it in your head like that, but it would sound weird out loud πŸ˜€

NIST’s official pronunciation is “jigawatt”. So the one who says “gheegawatt” is wrong.

Both “g” are pronounced “hard”, as in “gamble”, emphasis on the first syllable. I have heard the “i” pronounced “short” as in “in” and also somewhat more like a “long e” as in “deed”. Hence GI-guh-waht or GEE-guh-waht.
