How did the term “411” come to mean “information”?
I just want to know the origins of that term, how it was used before, and what “clique” or group uses this term most often.

If you dial 411 on the telephone (even today) you’ll get “Directory Assistance” or “Information.” They will give you any phone number that’s listed if you tell them the city and state and then who you’re looking for. Of course, they’ll charge you a fee ($1 or 2) for the service.

I have a friend who is a “411” operator…I’ll ask her. But I believe certain numbers are designed to be quick (like 911) and rather unlikely to be dialed by mistake (in case a little child is playing on the phone) ie; an emergangy number might be 2111.
Did I make sense?

It used to be that if you wanted a phone number, you could dial “411” for the information operator, and she/he would give it to you. (Now, I think there is a charge for that information; used to be free.)

411 is the phone number you call to get information on a phone number. As to what clique uses it the most, I have no idea.

Human sloppiness. Swearing potential taking an oath. Cursing potential magically hoping that some voodoo-like means might reason evil to befall somebody. human beings try this all the time. you need to call them idiots or morons, yet those 2 words initially meant stages of IQ under-conventional interior the Stanford -Binet classifications of human intelligence. so as that they do no longer seem to be precisely conventional, above conventional, nor proficient or genius, while they are so sloppy with our language. 🙂 Foul language in many cases refers to execrations concerning procreation events or taking some god’s call in ineffective. i’m happy you asked this question, giving me the possibility to get something “off my chest”.

Because that’s the number you dial on the phone if you are looking for information. IE: address or phone number.
