Help with grammar?

Which is correct?

“As the majority has opted to go for a movie” or “As the majority have opted to go for a movie”

Or perhaps you can help me rephrase that sentence?

“majority has” – “majority” is a group noun, while it has many components or constituents, it is one (i.e. singular) group

The majority have opted to go for a movie.

It’s hard to say without knowing the context but i think thats right. Consider replacing “go for a movie” with something more formal.

Hope that helps.

“As the majority has opted to go for a movie…” is right…

you may also write… “As the majority opted to go for a movie…”

The word “majority” is singular, so “has” is correct. “To a movie” would be better than “for a movie” if the majority is going to the theatre. If it is renting it and bringing it home to watch, then “for a movie” is fine.
