Sometimes raises are retroactive, meaning that they go back to a certain date before this pay period –in this case the pay would be considered backpay. Other times there was an error made and you might not have been payed for an hour or something, so they just add that payment to this check and consider it “backpay”. I’m sure there are other reasons too for backpay…just can’t think of any!

Hi luv, I do the accounts/wages where I work – backpay is something they have owed you from last month and not paid you for some reason. It could be that they took out too much money from your wages last month, or that they owe you for mileage, holiday…. a number of things. Some companies actually say what it is, and others like yours just put it under one header. If you don’t think your pay adds up to what it should, then query them. We’re only human after all and mistakes do happen! 😀

You say you “worked” for this company, past tense, so I take it you no longer are employed by them. Backpay is just that, backpay. It is money they owe you for work done. If it was tacked onto your regular check, it means that somewhere…sometime…you worked a couple of hours overtime, or they shorted you on a paycheck and are straightening it out.

A phonecall to their bookkeeper might help explain it. You sure want to make sure you have all the money they owe you.

Its a nice way of saying they messed up and owe you more it is pay you were supposed to get back when you didn’t get it. Backpay.

Or

If you look and it says you owed them something it is a nice way of saying they messed up and you owe them more money it is pay you should have given them back when they didn’t take it out of your check. Backpay.

Back pay-

is a payment due for work done prior to the current pay period. Back pay may be the result of a missed payment or a payment that was intentionally not made, or back pay may be owed due to a backdated pay increase. Back pay applies to both hourly as well as salaried employees, and back pay may also be applied to over-due payments owed to freelance workers, part-time employees, as well as consultants. If a company is chronically late in the payment of wages and salaries and owes considerable back pay to its employees, that is often a sign that a company is in financial trouble. Back pay may also be referred to as back salary or back wages.

what?
you know.. backpay is not in the dictionary…thats weird… it means that they owe you some money that you didn’t receive in the past… and they are paying it to you now.

It is a payment which was owed to you, probably because of a miss-calculation in your last pay cheque.

Either they owed you money, or you owed them money from an overpayment.

Depending on if it was a + or -, it could have been for many different reasons.

It’s money they owe you from an earlier paycheck. They must have shorted you in the past.
