grammar help! arrive or arrive at?

I’m not good at English…but, well, can anyone help me correct this sentence if it’s wrong?

“When I arrived home, I saw him cook in the kitchen.”

– Should I use “arrived home” or “arrived at home” ?

– Should I use “I saw him cook” or “I saw him cooking” or “I saw him cooked” ?

also, does “I said I can’t do it.” sound wrong?

…thank you!

Yes, “arrived home”. (And yes, “cooking in the kitchen” is better.)

Sometimes we DO add the “at” — as in “arriving at a conclusion” or “arriving at the specified time”.

“I said I can’t do it” is perfectly correct — if you did, indeed, say you couldn’t do it. Otherwise, it’s probably a lie, but still correct grammar. (smile)

Might I also observe that you seem to be doing quite well with English? (You even spelled “grammar” correctly which many questioners have not.)

“When I arrived home I saw him cooking in the kitchen.”

“I said I can’t do it’ is fine.

You do not have to add the word “at” to the sentence, but you DO have to change the word to “cooking” because he was still doing it. If the guy had finished what he was doing, then you would use the word “cooked.”
