Yeah, it’s a little annoying that many people have terrible spelling/grammar. It’s a somewhat obnoxious when people write as if they’re sending a text message. It’s slightly grating and embarrassing when people don’t care to know the difference between its and it’s; between their, there, and they’re; so on and so forth.
Ultimately, I don’t have high expectations for exceptional grammar/spelling when it comes to informal sites such as this. If I can read/understand the questions and/or the answers, that’s enough for me. It’s a little petty to run around the internet correcting everyone’s spelling/grammar. A lot of people on Yahoo Answers should be college English professors as per their complaints.
Verbal hygienists are annoying, and a lot of people on this site write how they talk…what a perfect pair for my nausea.
Again, communication is all about send and receive. If you can receive the information, why do you care about the package? If you can’t understand it, there’s a problem. If you refuse to understand it because it’s not how you want it…that sounds like a personal problem to me.
My main point is that this is not an intellectual forum. Yes, some smart questions/answers arise, but this site is not sponsored by a college/university. If you have trouble understanding something skip it. But don’t ignore someone who could possibly have something meaningful to contribute simply because they put their apostrophes in the wrong places. If they were speaking to you, would you ignore them for putting the emPHAsis on the wrong sylLABle?
I understand that, while a Standard English does not exist for spoken language, it does exist for written language. I understand that people look silly when they cannot use language correctly, and that incorrect usage is frustrating for people who understand how beautiful language can be. I just think that, while it’s a good place to express frustration, Yahoo Answers is not the most effective forum to engender change.
Lead by example. Teach your own children. Become a teacher, tutor, mentor…volunteer. It’s easy to read, complain, and claim that you’re doing something by posting a question online that only a handful of people will read.
Just remember that you don’t know these people…you don’t know their motives/personalities/education. Why are you so unnerved by other people having bad spelling/grammar. This isn’t a site for debate, it’s simply about questions and answers. You want points of view? Take them as they are. You want points for style and presentation? Start your own q&a site.
I’m trying, and for this alone I’ve now went back to school to better myself.
On that note do you think you, being equal and human as us, should look the other way?
Yahoo Q’s & A’s never once listed in their sign up agreement, to be in good grammer standing order.
Then again maybe did, but my hooked on phonices calsses really arent working fer me yet !
Sorie fer all the mistakes.
Edit: Joe- This is a problem everywhere in life. Maybe the school’s should really take a good look at how they are teaching one these days. Because school isn’t school anymore, it’s rather more about : How can we get more pay, hoilday time and more PD days that you can shake a stick at.
Nothing is like it used to be! NOTHING!
It was somewhat amusing because I became dismayed again, reading the first part of your so-called question… then you bombed us with the lessons. You could have stayed in lower case and have the same message come across, you know. It is a bit hard to be yelled at for no reason.
Still, take it easy but take it, as my old granny used to say.
Edit – Excuse me! Don’t try to teach me English!
Amen to your statement. You forgot to mention “your” when the intention is “you are” and “then” for “than” when making a comparison.
