Go ‘to’ work, but go home?

Why is it that you go ‘to’ work, go ‘to’ the store, go ‘to’ a concert, but yet you only ‘go’ home? Why is it not go ‘to’ home?

It’s easy. “Home” can be adv, adj, noun and verb. In this case, it’s an adverb; that’s why you don’t need “to” a prep. “work, concert” are nouns, so they need a prep.

“Work” is both a noun and a verb. I think that’s why you say “go to work,” to distinguish it from a different meaning.

If you said “go to a home,” it would not only have a different meaning, but might be interpreted as a home that’s not your own.

If you think about how they’re used, it makes sense.

I don’t know why from a grammatical point of view, but ‘go to home’ doesn’t sound right. The other examples sound better when ‘to’ is used.

Because ‘go home’ is a fixed expression where the preposition ‘to’ is implied, but not stated. You could also say ‘I’m going to my house.’
