It’s been a long while since high school grammar class, but I’ll give it a shot.

When a verb is preceded by the word “to”, it is said to be in its infinitive (most basic) form.

Example: I have to find the cat! (“to find” – infinitive form of the verb)

A bit of the Bard: To be or not to be … (“to be” – infinitive form of the verb)

Placing another word between “to” and its verb is called a “split infinitive” and is considered by some to be a mistake.

Example: You have to really try. (The infinitive verb “to try” is split by the word “really”.)

The wisdom of Star Trek: To boldy go where no man has gone before. (Yep. Captain Kirk split his infinitive.) (The infinitive verb “to go” is split by the word “boldly”.)

Hope this helps!
