Don’t you wish your girlfriend was hot like me? Correct usage???

Isn’t the correct usage of was in that sentence..WERE?? I’ve always thought that! Don’t you wish your girlfriend were hot like me? It’s were because you’d say “Don’t you wish you were…” “Don’t you wish she weren’t so….” But then AGAIN I wanna say..”Don’t you wish your toy ‘wasn’t’ broken?” They’re all past tense but why do I want to say wasn’t instead of weren’t for the Toy example? Idunno. WHICH ONE IS IT?? HELP. plz

Using “were” is an example of the subjunctive verb mood, which is used to express things that are hypothetical, hoped for, not true at the moment, and so on. It’s unfortunately less and less common in modern English, showing up mostly in usages like “if I were you”.

No… “Don’t you wish your (current) girlfriend was hot like me?” – is perfectly OK. You would only use ‘were’ if you said/sang – “Don’t y’all wish your girlfriends were hot like me?”.

So I am not sure why you want to say ‘were’ instead of ‘was’ because, well, basically because it is wrong! Sorry.

I know that “was” is singular and “were” is plural. If you used “were” it would mean you are referring to a group of people.

Or she would be too polite to the girl she is jealous off!!!
