I think you might need to pluralize lifestyles/ethnic backgrounds…

“These regions varied from each other in exports, lifestyles, and ethnic backgrounds.”

You are speaking of the contrast of plural subjects….exportS are different, lifestyleS are different, and lastly, the ethnicitieS of the inhabitants are different.
