Since gross motor activities involve lags and arms, there are many possibilities. Old standbys would include Hokey Pokey, Farmer In The Dell, Musical Chairs, etc. Any marching or dancing would be good, too. Also, I’ve seen teachers and kids doing some parachute activities with music.

Any song that requires the children to do large muscle movements while listening to the song. Hokey Pokey comes to mind. You could get some musical instruments and make a “marching band” play follow the leader with music in the background as each student plays their instrument. When the music stops then the front child goes to the back and the next child is the leader.

I play a cute game with my kids where we walk around the room while the music plays. When the music stops, I say one or two body parts and the kids have to connect to the person next to them. For example, I would say, ” Knees” and you would have to touch your knee to someone else’s. Or I would say, “Hip to elbow” and one person would have to put his elbow on another’s hip. Sounds a little strange, but the kids like it. You could also get some songs with musical directions, like an exercise CD (my favorite is called Aerobic Power for kids ages 4 to 10) or just a song with directions. My favorite is Listen and Move by Greg and Steve. I actually made my own listen and move tape by putting different types of fast and slow music and giving the kids instructions such as walk, run, dance, ballet, gallop, tiptoe, skate, fly, and crawl.

The most obvious gross motor activity is dancing. Dancing with music? Who would have thought?
