Hello Goodbye

Do you think you know what this is? Help please!?

So, one of the assignments for my English class is to come back with some good, understandable examples of metonymy.

Metonymy is a figure of speech that substitutes a word with a different but closely associated word.

Anything that you can think of will really help, thank you in advance!

Metonymy replaces a word with an associated concept.

The metaphor “lend me your ear” would become “pay attention.”

One example of metonymy would be to refer to reporters as “the press.” Reporters don’t resemble a press, but “the press” is a common metonym for reporters.

Royalty is often referred to as “the crown,” although there is nothing crown-like about a king or queen. Calling royalty “the crown” is an example of metonymy.

“Fishing for compliments” is a metonymic phrase. The word “fishing” elicits visions if drawing forth from the sea, but what is drawn forth is a compliment, hence the alternate concept of the word fishing.

Another definition of metonymy that helped illuminate the concept : Reference to something or someone by naming one of its attributes.

“Metonymy is similar, but uses something more generally or loosely associated with a concept to stand in for it. When Americans speak of the Oval Office, for example, they are really referring to the activity within it, the position or function of the President. It’s a linked term, and so a metonym. British writers refer similarly to the Crown, when they’re really discussing the powers, authority and responsibilities of the monarchy, which is symbolised by the crown”” from http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-syn1.htm

*He is a man of the cloth.

*The pen is mightier than the sword.

*By the sweat of thy brow thou shalt eat thy bread.

*We await word from the crown.

*Bush has bombed Iraq.
