Difficult and Challenging?

What do you believe the difference is between the words difficult and challenging? Give an example to back up your statment. I have my own thoughts, but I can’t help but wonder if they contradict each other sometimes.

PS. I don’t need a dictionary definition, I have the resources for that. I just want to see how deep people can think of these two words, and see where the differences in opinion lie in regards to their meanings.

Now, you have me thinking.

Their definitions aside, I think that the word difficult shows more negativity than the word challenging. Saying something is difficult shows a defeatist attitude while saying a task is challenging shows a positive attitude or tackling it head on despite the “difficulties”.

Have a star, sweetie.

i agree with the answers above. The word difficult appears to have a negative connotation. It’s like you use to it describe something that is super hard to do or tackle, making you want to give up instead. For instance, when someone says “This question is difficult,” it makes the listener think that there’s a huge possibility the question cannot be answered or you won’t be able to answer it.

Challenging on the other hand stirs a competitive perspective. It makes you think that the issue CAN be solved, though it will take much time and effort. It gives you a positive impression of a task or whatever it is that’s challenging.

Imagine you encountered challenging behaviour from someone you were dealing with. That would almost be testing you. Trying your patience and your ability to keep a professional facade.

Another person might be difficult to understand. No challenge there, but not easy either.

Difficult assumes a pessimism that makes whatever the task seem daunting and hard to achieve.

Challenging assumes a “conquer it” attitude that makes a big task seem worth the risk.

‘Challenging’ has become a politically correct euphemism for ‘difficult’. Can’t say a lot more, look at social services job adverts or those for foster parents.

challenging – something I must do and will gain or improve by doing
