Decipher, how can the word be used?

I was talking to a friend and i said quote” I cant decipher on what tv show to watch to night..”

Is that a correct way of using the word or have I misused it?

It means to figure out a code or some puzzle. Example:

His teacher couldn’t decipher his writing, so she gave him an F.

Your usage is incorrect. Use the word decide in that example.

Decipher = to read or interpret or decode.

So I give your quote of yourself speaking to your friend a big Hmm. I would say you have misused the word.

Then I’d advise you to use the word ‘decide,’ or the words ‘figure out,’ in regards to what TV show to watch.

You misused it. “Decipher” means to figure out a code or something that’s difficult to understand.

For example, if your friends say they can’t decipher your handwriting, that means that your handwriting is hard to read. If someone on Yahoo Answers says they can’t decipher a question, that means that the question is written so that it’s hard to understand.

In the context of your conversation about which TV show to watch, I think the word you were looking for was “decide.” Hope that helps!

Sorry, you misused it. “Decipher” means to figure something out in the sense of breaking a code or a difficult translation. You used it in the simple sense of “figure out” that is closer to “decide”. Examples: The Greek text I was supposed to translate was so hard I couldn’t decipher it. The CIA agent used his codebook to decipher the secret message.

Well… it’s ok, but “decide” would be better. “Decipher” in this situation gives the impression that you don’t understand the schedule, rather than simply being unable to decide what you want to watch.
