You would use a comma in any sentence that requires a brief pause. For example:
Yesterday, Tom and I went to the store and bought groceries.
You do not use one in the following circumstance:
I told you yesterday that I didn’t want to go to the dance with you.

Rule of thumb: when you read a sentence out loud and have to pause for breath thats where the comma goes.
