To “write to the punch” is to set up the comedy line for someone else to provide. The Punch line is generally the humorous part of the joke. Writing to the punch, is setting this up for the other person to make the joke.
“How fat is yo momma” (writing to the punch)
“She is so fat that she has pesos in her right pocket and euros in her left pocket(punch line)
