“If that’s the truth, then we’re going to have no choice but to sell our shares, Timmy,” I muttered into the cell phone. Normally, I’d never bring my phone out in the subway car, but my day was going to hell in a handbasket, so I was beyond caring what the other commuters thought of my breach of etiquette. The snob in front of me had already made deep huffing noises twice, and the hobo behind me was eyeing the phone like a future investment.
“Well I don’t care Timmy. Call our broker. Get it taken care of.”
I hung up and glared at the snob as if I could force all the wretchedness I felt on her. I could almost envision her drab blouse catching fire.
And suddenly the lights went out.
As I was positive my day could not get worse, that’s exactly what it did. One minute I’m casting smouldering glances at this witch in front of me and the next I’m blind in the dark.
A collective groan rose from the subway car. I dropped the cell phone back in my pocket and hoisted my umbrella defensively.
“I hope that’s not what I think it is,” a haughty female voice said from in front of me.
“Oh dream on,” I hissed as I shifted the umbrella again to keep from poking her. To truly top matters, I noticed that the subway car had come to a complete stop as power apparently had shorted in the rails as well. Great. Now I would be late for work on top of everything else.
“Hey buddy,” a gravelly voice whispered behind me. “That wassa nice phone you had there. Fella like you prolly has some spare change too?”
“Give it a rest, huh corky?” I said. I mean these people would panhandle in the middle of nuclear fallout. I felt the hobo’s hand paw at the back of my shirt, andI half turned, poking the snob with my umbrella again by accident.
“Watch it, jerk!” She growled. “You’re gonna run that thing through my skull if you keep it up!”
“Don’t tempt me twice! Lousy witch! Why don’t you move forward in the car a ways and give me some breathing room, eh?” I was starting to shake as agitation surrounded me on all sides.
“Well next time, if there is a next time, I’m gonna stick your umbrella AND your cell phone in your poop chute. Smoke on that you smarta**”.
“C’mon pal. Just a buck or two? Ya gotta have at least that.”
“Both of you stifle it!” I screamed. “Why the hell did I ever pick this city? You bunch of morons could drive the pope crazy!”
A chorus of commentary reached me from all over the subway car.
“Shaddap. Close it. Then move away jerkoff!” yadda yadda yadda.
The hobo’s hand closed over my wrist this time and I snapped. The true New Yorker in me came to the fore and I started swing my umbrella and yelling at the top of my lungs. In the dark I have no idea who I hit,or even the things I said. I just kept screaming and swinging. Swinging and screaming. More hands grabbed me, and I grew all the more frenzied. And that’s all I remember….
Two hours later the power came back on. The subway car started moving and the lights popped back on inside. At the fifth street station the doors opened and a police officer came in to check on the wellbeing of the formerly trapped passengers. Officer Gentry, who retired one week later, will never forget what he discovered inside of car number 4 on that day. The visions will haunt him for what remains of his life and the media can only speculate as to what vision greeted him. He will not talk about it so don’t ask him.
And me? What exactly happened here, they all asked me? What went on in there for two hours? But I’m not talking. Haven’t said a word since that day in fact. It’s been four years of silence, and I don’t think I’d have it any other way….
(I have diarrhea of the story. Sorry for the length…lol…have a good day!)
dun dun dun!!!! stay tuned to find out what exactly the ‘victim’ did and what was on the ceiling! Watch for next weeks episode!
Carrie sat up rubbed her eyes and asked, “what?”
“there was a phone call on your cell phone and I didn’t know whether to answer it or not. so i did anyway and, he wants to talk to you.” Jill handed Carrie the phone.
“yeah?” asked Carrie into the speaker.
“hello Carrie.” said a familiar voice. “this is Gordon. Remember me?”
as a matter of fact Carrie did remember him. He was her ex-boyfriend who started cutting himself and doing drugs after they broke up. she gulped, “yeah. I remember you Gordon.”
“Well I’m back in town and your voice sounds sexy. I was wondering if I could meet you and your husband soon.”
“no Gordon.”
“oh come on.” said Gordon.
“no” Carrie said sternly.
“are you sure baby?”
“Gordon, I feel like reaching through this phone and yanking your intestines out through your throat.” Carrie was extra mad now, but she couldn’t bring herself to hang up the phone.
“You haven’t gotten over me have you? You didn’t really fall in love with that jerk of a husband you have.”
Now she was furious. “Don’t tempt me twice! Gordon just…just shut up!” she finally pressed the end button. In less than a half a minute her cell phone rang. Jill reached for it. “wait.” said Carrie, “Lets see who it is first.” it was Gordon.
So she climbed back into bed Theo looked over and asked, “who was that?”
Carrie said, “oh just an idiot ex-boyfriend.” when she saw the look on Theo’s face she specified, “trust me Theo, he’s a total idiot.”
Theo still had a questioning look in his eye. “if that’s the truth, why did he call you?”
“Theo he is just an idiot who can’t face facts.”
“Okay.” said Theo. and they both fell asleep
In the morning Carrie was the first to wake up. She walked into the kitchen and was about ready to make some waffles when she realized something. All of the windows in the kitchen and in the dining room were broken and there was water on the floor making a trail into the hallway. Imagining the worst, Carrie dashed back into the hallway and checked on her two sons. They were fine, and the trail led to the office. When she walked in there she saw papers scattered all over the floor and the computer montitor was broken. She turned and began walking to the bedroom to wake Theo up. She tapped his shoulder and finally got him to open his eyes and follow her. Carrie assured him that their sons were okay, so she showed him the office, the trail of water, and the broken windows. Theo went to call the police. Carrie was sure Jill was okay. There wasn’t a trail anywhere near the living room, but she went to check anyway. Jill was still fast asleep and not having any idea what was going on around her.
Before too long the cops came. The first policeman asked, “So what exactly happened here?” Carrie and Theo explained everything to him while the policemen examined the house. The police were going to have Carrie and Theo stay somewhere else while they finished their examinations. Carrie also told them all about the call she got from Gordon. Theo woke up the little boys and brought them into the living room. Jill had already drove home in her car, and Carrie didn’t want to freak her out by telling her what happened. They decided to stay at Theo’s brother, Cory’s house. Carrie told Cory about the phone call in the middle of the night and she said “I’ve decided that next time, if there is a next time, I’ll-I’ll, I dont know what I’ll do. Any ideas Cory?”
“Well,” he said, “If the cops catch him, then it won’t be a problem and he’ll be in jail, so I don’t think we will have to worry too much.”
Theo and Carrie stayed at Cory’s for about a week and the police still hadn’t found Gordon. One night, when they were almost asleep her cell phone rang. She was too tired to check to caller ID, so she just sleepily said “hello?”
“Hi Carrie. How are you?”
It was Gordon again. “I’m okay, but why are you calling me?”
“I love hearing your voice Carrie. It’s calming.”
“Gordon please leave me alone.”
“I can’t Carrie. I tried and I just can’t. Your irresistible baby.”
“please don’t call me that.”
“oh no. I have to go, but I love you baby.” she heard the clicking sound of his phone hanging up.
Theo had been awakened by her phone too and asked with fear in his voice, “Was that him again?”
“yeah” answered Carrie. They were both scared. Too scared to sleep even. Theo went into the other guest bedroom and took their sons with him and laid them in the middle of he and Carrie. The boys were still asleep.
Suddenly, they heard the sound of glass breaking. Theo looked over at Carrie. “I hope that’s not what I think it is.” he said. They heard the crashes again. Then heard someone walking on a wood floor. There were more crashes, but these weren’t like glass breaking. These were like things being thrown and knocked oven onto the floor. There were footsteps again, the sound of a door opening and slamming. Theo and Carrie were both too frightened to move.
In the morning, when they woke up, Cory was already awake and trying to clean up the mess in the kitchen. There was food thrown all over the floor and everything that was in the refrigerator had been taken out and thrown on the floor. There was soda and lots of other liquids spilled on the floor too. Cory looked up at them when they came in. He walked over to Carrie and asked her, “Do you think its the same guy? I called the cops.” Carrie told him about the phone call from the night before. When the police got there they asked Cory, Theo, and Carrie a lot of questions. They all answered them and the policeman was sure that it was Gordon who broke in, but he said that they couldn’t jump to conclusions yet. Three more days went by until they found Gordon they took him in for interrogation, but he never cracked. Theo and Carrie decided to stay in Cory’s house and help him pay for the repairs. Theo and Cory didn’t think it was Carrie’s fault that someone attacked but she insisted so Theo gave in. Two weeks had gone by since the first attack and there was another one on a house on the other side of town. Carrie had filed a restraining order against Gordon so he couldn’t call her anymore. Finally the police caught up to the criminal. He was a man who got really drunk once a week and would start to go really crazy. It was just a coincidence that Gordon called on the same night and that the man attacked almost every place where Carrie and Theo were at. They all got the repairs done for the house and were able to move back in.
