A Woman and a Boy Not Alone

A mother and her son lived alone in a small cottage just outside of New Orleans, in a small town called Westwego.

Sarah, the boys mother, had been recently divorced from her cruel, and abusive husband, and this cottage, this in-expensive shack in which they lived, was what Mama could afford, having lost financial stability through a marriage of failed promises of love.

David was only 4 when Mama lost her war, to keep a love alive, that just couldn’t be. Yet, he knew of his Mamas pain. Smart lad that he is! He would watch her weeping in the kitchen, in her bedroom, in the yard. He knew Mama was afraid, too. Although he was young, he realized why Mama was stung, and he asked himself, “How much more can Mama take?”

It had been such a long time that Davey had seen Mama smile, but he knew Papa coming to Mama wasn’t the right thing for them, to occur. Mama was afraid of Papa, and so was Davey. He himself had experienced the abuse by his father, as well as his Mama also had, although, he was confused as to why Papa hurt them.

Davey was a strong lad, and supported his Mama. He was going to change her sadness to happiness any way he could. He made a decision, and a big one for his age that day.

One day he approached Sarah, his mother, and best friend. “Mama”, he began, “you’re the most beautiful person I have ever seen”, which got a smile out of her. Davey knew he was on the right track then!

He continued. “Mama, just let me look at you, so I can feel very proud that you are my Mom, and you love me so much. I know you are sad sometimes, but don’t be Mama, because you have me. You’re my bestest Mama!”

Davey hugged Sarah in great joy, with a smile on his face as big as the sun, and looked at his Mama, who’s smile was the same. Yes, she had tears in her eyes, but this time full of pure happiness. She said to Davey, “Why did you wait till now, to say this beautiful thing to me? I needed to hear that from you, Precious!”

“Well, Mama”, said Davey, “with all your silly crying, well, that just didn’t help even a little bit! I didn’t know what to do to make you smile, and see that there is already love inside me, to give to you, and you to me!”

Davey was pointing at his puffed up chest, as proud as a boy could be, now knowing Mama, and he, were not alone, like they had thought to be. Sarah knew it, too, all thanks to a little boy, named, Davey. Her wonderful, precious baby!

Sarah thought, as the sun went down, and precious Davey asleep, and sound, that in her heart she would try to forgive the past, but never forget the moments of last, when Davey her son, showed her that true love is within grasp.

“How much can I take?” I cried in desperation after slamming my car door. I turn the ignition and peeled out of that hateful driveway. Speeding onto the interstate I turned my radio up all the way, blasting some song called Papa is going to Mamma. “Why now?” I asked God, “It’s been a long time that I have been working here but my new boss is making my life miserable.” The new boss was the type of person who would take his frustrations out on everything or everyone around him and that just doesn’t help one little bit. I speed down the highway still steaming from the chewing out I had received from him earlier. Thinking back I remembered what a fellow employee had said ” Try to forgive, but never forget about how easy it is to make him mad.” With a heavy sigh I pulled into the driveway and saw my dog sitting there, waiting for me so peacefully and content. Getting out of my car, I sat next to my dog. “Just let me look at you” I said to him, “You are such a good dog”. He happily put his paw on my lap and licked my cheek. Funny, how a dog can comfort you without saying a word.

(Can anybody tell it’s been a stressful day?)

I didn’t care any more when the doctor said brain surgery, and even less when he said I’d spend thirty-one days in the hospital. However once I knew I could keep the family close, that I’d be treated like a queen and I knew I was loved and needed, I didn’t mind that there was a long road to recovery ahead of me. (Thank all family and friends for being there in times of need!)

I was going on my first real date, she was a tall redhead named Madison, and a beauty. I was naturally nervous as I knocked on her door. Her father answered the door and said, “You must be Bud, come on in” I went to the couch and sat down when he asked”Nuts?” “Huh?” I said. “Nuts, would you like some, there on the table.” he answered. “Oh, sure, how much can I take?” I asked. “Help yourself, I’ll let Madison know you are here”

The Macadamia nuts were good, but I was getting real thirsty. “It’s been a long time since I had Macadamia nuts sir!” I said to no one. “I sure could go for a beer…” I mumbled. “I heard that” said her father as he came in with a couple cold ones. “Here ya go” and he handed me one. “Oh no sir, I was just kidding…I’m driving tonight.” “Good answer!!” he said, taking the beer back, “Guess I’ll have to drink both. I’ll go get you a soda” he said and left, cracking a horrendous fart on his way out.

That’s when Madison came down, looking terrific, as usual. She had a big smile on her face until she neared the odor, then she winced and yelled out, “DADDY!!” “Just sharing a little love sweetie!” he said from the kitchen. “Old Papa is going to Mama, she’ll want to meet Bud too!”

I rose and said to her, “Just let me look at you, you make each breath worthwhile”, and I kissed her on the cheek.

“Sorry about Daddy’s rudeness…” “Ah heck I feel honored that he’d share one with me, makes me feel like family” I said. “Yes…but why now?? I hope that stink don’t soak into our clothes.” she said. “Don’t worry about it Madison, and that doesn’t help one little bit, it messes up that pretty smile of yours.” I said, sitting down with her.

“Did you get some nuts?” she asked. Yeah, they’re good, but your Dad was gunna get me a soda.” “I’ll get you one” she said as she rose. “I still can still smell that…yuck, I try to forgive, but never forget Daddy’s smell.”

And that is how our first date began.

The invitation had been extended to her by a former boyfriend…….. Tom Richards; Someone she had met after her husband’s death, and before Matt Dillon, her present boyfriend….The love of her life. She and Matt had not parted under the best of terms.

PART TWO:

“Sunshine Returns To Virginia

Subtitle…….”Papa Is Going To Mama”

U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon was feeling blue. He wanted to be with Sunshine for the dedication. He wanted to pay homage to her father and husband. Hewas anxious to meet her mother….and her father, who would be there for the service,

but his responsibilities prevented him from leaving at this time. He was slated to escort an prisoner from Dodge to Hays City.

Festus Haggen, Matt’s friend and deputy, walked into his office……..”Matthew, I wish you’d perk up a little bit. Miss Sunshine knows you can’t be with her all the time. And she’ll be back before ya know it. Shoot…….. You don’t need to worry about your gal. I’m sure that the feller who sent her the invitation will watch out for her.” Matt grimaced!

He looked at Festus…..”I’ll be back in a day. Watch out for things while I’m gone. I have a headache, I’m angry, tired and…..(6) And that just doesn’t help one little bit.”

That evening Matt rode out to the farm that Sunshine shared with him. He did all the necessary chores and then sat down on the sofa to play with Daisie Dixie and Gray Lady:

As he petted and cuddled them, he looked around the house. Sunshine’s touches were everywhere. From the kichen window to the mantlepiece…… She had left her signiture:

Matt looked lovingly down at the two furry babies.

Matt:”Well…. It’s just the three of us, kids. You’re stuck with papa. Mama is gone.” He thought of Sunshine in the company of an old boyfriend…. Actually TWO old boyfriends….Remember, Kevin Dunbar would be there ,as well.

“And let us not forget….. She had others! ” He sat there, stomach churning,nerves on a ragged edge………(1) How much (more) can I take?!”

Matt got up and started packing a bag…….

“Hey you two ………. (3) Papa is going to Mama.”

In two days, Matt was on the train heading East.

Meanwhile, Sunshine had arrived in Virginia. Her parents met her at the train depot.

Her parents,Frederick and “Dannie” Yates, ran through the crowd to reach her.

Frederick:” Oh, Sunny…… (2) It’s been a long time, daughter.”

Dannie started crying….(4) “Just let me look at you, sweetheart.”

Sunshine melted into their out stretched arms. Combined with her exhaustion from the long train ride and the fact that she had dearly missed her parents, was her ever gnawing hurt and frustration in re: to Matt. A three-way hug, one of their family traditions, continued as the other passengers hustled and bustled around them.

Frederick: ” Tom Richards and Kevin Dunbar pracically had a fist fight over who would join us at the depot. I told both of them to stay the hell away.” Sunshine laughed as the three of them walked over to the waiting buggy.

Dannie:”Darling?…… I rather thought we would finally meet your young man. Why didn’t Matt join you?”

Frederick:”Leave the girl alone, Dannie. She’ll tell us when she wants to.” Aside, for only Sunshine to hear……”How dare he not be here for this special occasion.”

Throughout the train station, there were notices posted, alerting people to the coming event…… “(7) Try to forgive, but never forget” read some of them. “Gone But Never Forgotten,” read others.

On their way home, they stopped by Arlington Cememtery.

They walked over to Jackson Circle:

Sunshine picked some wildflowers and laid them on her husband’s grave.

Kevin and Tom were both anxiously waiting their arrival.

Tom:’ You had your chance, Dunbar. Your behavior was not befitting a gentleman.” (Kevin had been unfaithful.)

Kevin: ” (5) Why now? Why must you bring that up NOW !!”

Tom: “Because here you sit, waiting for her return. You’re nothing but a lying cheat.”

Kevin took a swing at him. The two of them were fighting as Sunshine and her parents arrived

Frederick:”STOP IT!!! BOTH OF YOU!!!”

Tom and Kevin immediately stopped and ran over to the buggy.
