Wally never thought he’d ever win anything especially after years of buying lottery tickets and entering various draws until one Tuesday morning he got a call saying he had won an all expense trip for two, to this lovely resort, down south for this coming week-end. He was so excited he ran to the kitchen where his wife, Maryellen, was making breakfast.
“IT WAS THE LUCK OF THE DRAW” he said all excited. “I won, I actually won! We’re going this week-end to a lovely resort.”
“That’s great dear but I can’t go with you. I promised the Women’s group I would help them cater to this dinner they are having. I can’t leave now but why don’t you take George. I really don’t mind and it will do you good to get away.” Maryellen said.
Wally was a little disappointed but he also knew his wife never said anything she didn’t mean. George on the other hand was thrilled and met Wally Friday afternoon at the airport ready to take off for a good time. It was a grand hotel and they each had their own rooms with everything they could want.
Saturday they enjoyed tennis, hiking, the pools, sauna, and good food.
Before supper they showered and changed. Wally about to leave his room heard a knock at the door and a woman said she was the maid with clean towels. He let her in and watched as she walked passed him to the bathroom. She had long, dark, black hair, about Maryellen’s height and size. She seemed to glide across the floor and as she came back she winked at Wally and rolled a couple of MARBLE KISSES which he grabbed automatically because that’s what he did whenever Maryellen blew him a kiss good-bye. “What am I doing?” Wally said feeling a moment of guilt. “What A MYSTERIOUS WOMAN. She doesn’t look or act like a maid should.” Wally shook it off and went to the dining room with George telling him about the maid but for some reason she hadn’t gone to his room. Oh well!
They ordered supper, had a beer, and while waiting for their desert George asked Wally what he was staring at.
“Her, over there, it’s that maid again only she’s wearing a long blue dress. She’s looking at me. Doesn’t she look like A MYSTERIOUS WOMAN to you? Oh gee, she’s throwing MARBLE KISSES AGAIN.” Wally sounded a wee bit panicky.
“Get a grip of yourself Wally. She probably has a few jobs working in a hotel like this. Come on, let’s hit the town tonight.”
Wally was a little shook up but didn’t want George to know how much so he told him to go ahead because he really didn’t want to go without Maryellen.
Wally decided to go for a quick rest and then a swim. Upon entering his room he knew something wasn’t quite right. It even had a strange smell that he couldn’t place. He went to brush his teeth and noticed something sticking out from the fresh towels. Removing one of them he uncovered a gun and some kind of drugs. How he knew they were drugs he didn’t know. He just knew they were. He started to panic and as he moved knocked the gun over and it went off. His heart was pounding. How was he going to explain this to the police because surly someone must have heard it and called by now.
Sure enough BY THE TIME THE COPS HAD ARRIVED the hallway was full and in breezed that damn woman again in a green pant suit.
Wally hysterically asked, “What’s she doing here?”
“Never mind her,” the cops said, “WE WANT THE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE WHOLE TRUTH so start talking,” but before Wally could say anything the cuffs were being put on him and the drug bag shoved in his face.
The mysterious woman winked and blew him a kiss as she stood behind the cop.
Poor Wally didn’t know if he was coming or going. “Get her out of here,” he screamed.
“Look” the woman interrupted, “I’ll take over from here.”
“You! You! “Wally screeched, “You’re the one that got me in this mess.”
She came closer, smiled and said, “Yes and I’ll get you out.”
“Maryellen? What am I saying it couldn’t be could it?” he thought to himself as she smiled again.” It is you!” Wally exclaimed.
THE SMILE IS WHAT FINALLY DID IT. “Damn Maryellen, no one smiles like you with those dimples. Now what is going on?”
Maryellen took the wig off and had been part of the whole thing so Wally would have a LUCK OF THE DRAW he’d never forget. George had been all part of it but not the ending. It was Maryellen who calmed Wally down the rest of the week-end in only a way no one else could.
She caught him smiling at her. And by “the luck of the draw”, he got up and approached her. But as he did a fight broke out in the back ground. So, she blew him some “marble kisses” on the wind. As they ducked for cover under the table. “By the time the cops finally arrived there”, the fight was bieggngint o cool down a bit. So, she turned to the gentleman and thank him for his help. He told her that it was her smile, “the smile is what finally did it” for him.
And that’s “the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”
