Can someone please tell me….?

Why is it that spelling things wrong is almost cool now? I’m just curious. It’s like people spell things wrong because it’s “in” or something…Why is that?

Examples::

cuz=should be because..or ’cause

dat= that??

dis= this??

et cetera!

Plus, why is is c00l 2 typ3 with numb3rs?

I think it is largely due to modern communication taking place on forums such as this. We have become more dependent on the keyboard (which ultimately requires some ability to spell) than we are on our voices, and the intonation within them.

These misspellings seem like laziness for the most part. But I suppose it is also so that people can express themselves in a more unique manner to show some sort of individuality. Personally, it makes more sense to showcase these qualities through what you say and how you express your ideas, rather than forcing your fingers to punch those keys that never seem to get used…

I take more issue with misspellings that grammatically change an idea and often make them confusing. Besides, people look like idiots when they don’t know the difference between your and you’re…but this is my dilemma…

For anyone interested in proper grammar, it is anything but cool – it is an example of laziness and possibly ignorance. If it is intentional, then it is actually a little sad that people want to downplay their intelligence in such a manner, and if it is a matter of not knowing any better, then it is even sadder that they are so poorly educated.

In the case of truncated (shortened) words, it might be in part due to a changing digital culture who’ve grown up expressing themselves in IMs and text messages, in order to facilitate and speed up the act of getting their message across. Additionally, phone text messages are limited to about 150 characters, so people using them learn how to cut words down to make them easier to fit into the body of their messages.

Changes like “dat” and “dis” are probably to cash in on any “cool points” stemming from things that are trendy in modern pop culture.

The typing with numbers part is more than likely related to the earliest days of being online, when various BBS users and people that fancied themselves computer geeks and hackers would use substituted letters and words to bypass content filters. If the word “hack” would get your message banned or deleted, well, perhaps the word “h4ck” or the like would get through. As time went on, typing with numbers took on this connotation of “online eliteness,” especially considering the egos and bravado that accompany alot of of the old-school hackers. (By the way, I use hacker in the neutral form, describing a person who uses technology in order to overcome problems, rather than a person who abuses computers for illicit purposes.)

I don’t know, really. It gets annoying after awhile. The only one I really use is ‘cuz’.
