What does it mean to, “build character”?

I heard someone say, “building character is a project you never complete”.

When I was in college, I had the dirty job of washing the dishes of thousands of students. Most of these students did not have a moment of financial worry. I did. Some of these students thought they were very funny and put sausages and orange juice in the drinking glasses and messed up the plates. I had to clean all of this and my dad told me, “It builds character.”

Years later, with a business to run, a spouse and child to support, I learned that my character was built on doing what needed to be done, no matter how much I did not like it, and

helping others. My dad was trying to teach me that building character meant acting like an adult instead of a child.

Doing the tough stuff and thinking of others first. Letting go of the ego and going towards the goal. This is what building character is all about.

Good luck

The phrase often used is “adversity builds character” and conveys the key idea that if one does not avoid difficulties in life one learns to handle them and becomes inured to difficulty. Thus character is identified with a kind of emotional toughness, and an uncomplaining personality used to little charity. The cartoonist Watterson who created the Calvin and Hobbes comics loved by many had an amusing take on this. If you have not read them you have missed an essential part of modern civilization :-). Look at the link below. Calvin is a little boy whose patent attorney dad is a fitness and camping devotee, subjecting Calvin and his mom to arduous camping trips they hate. Dad’s response to Calvin’s complaints on the trips? “Adversity builds character”.

Perhaps character building can never be complete. The Buddha said that life is about suffering, and release can only come with the attainment of enlightenment — Nirvana — else we are subject to rebirth and the adversity starts all over again. Oh dear ….

To build a fence, you are separating yourself from something. A fence around the yard for example separates you from your neighbor. I find it ironic in this society that there are so many “fences” both literally and figuratively. Very little real knowledge, or real communication
