Can i start this sentence with because?

Because of the pressure of water, sinking a hollow cylinder down to ocean floor, but keeping the top above the water surface, does not allow a diver underneith the water to breathe air throught the cylinder?

Is is acceptable to start this sentence with because, if not what other possible words could replace it?

Yes, but there are other problems with the sentence.

The double gerund phrase (sinking…,keeping…,) in the middle as a subject of your verb (does) gets confusing. It’s hard to tell from this long, complicated sentence exactly WHAT does not allow the diver to breathe or what water pressure has to do with it.

Break it up into 2-3 sentences that explain more clearly:

1. the situation (hollow cylinder with its top above the surface),

2. what water pressure does to it, and

3. why the diver can’t breathe through the cylinder.

Not necessarily in that order. Also, check your spelling.

I’d say

Due to the pressure of water, sinking a hollow cylinder down to ocean floor, but keeping the top above the water surface, does not allow a diver underneath the water to breathe air throught the cylinder?

Though most of that doesn’t make any sense to me, I changed the start of the sentence for you.

It is ok to start a sentence with because but it is not recommended. How about… Due to the pressure of water? In any case your sentence is worded poorly. .. I would personally make it into several sentences. But… try this….

Sinking a hollow cylinder down to the ocean floor while keeping the top above water will still not allow a diver to breath due to the immense pressure of water on the cylinder.

This sentence makes no sense to me. I don’t know anything about the topic and I have no idea what you are saying. This sentence is impossible to understand. Don’t worry about starting it with because, because the problem is the whole sentence. I think you are trying to say…? Due to water pressure, a diver is not able to breath air through a cylinder that has been sunk to the ocean floor while keeping the top of the cylinder above the waters surface.

You can, given the context, but to be honest I think your teacher would be happier if you didn’t, simply because it’s one of those rules not to start a sentence with “and” or “because.”

How about this as a replacement:

Due to the pressure of water, sinking a hollow cylinder down to the the ocean floor, but keeping the top above the water surface, does not allow a diver underneath the water to breathe air through the cylinder.

Its acceptable, just make sure you can turn the sentence around and it still make sense.

Does not allow a diver underneath the water to breathe air through the cylinder, because of the pressure of water, sinking a hollow cylinder down to ocean floor, but keeping the top above the water surface.

That doesn’t make any sense, so you would have to re-word your sentence. Because you will re-word it, the sentence will make sense.

I would definately say ‘due to the water pressure’ from what i remember at school you shouldn’t start a sentence with because. I know sometimes it makes sense in ure head but apparantly it’s not really meant to be used.

Just had a thought….who makes up these word rules?

Sure you can start a sentence w/ because. There’s nothing wrong with it as long as its a complete thought.

The sentence you have there is a bit confusing to read through, consider revising it.

Here’s an example of what I’m talking about:

Becuase someone asked a question, she got an answer.

She got an answer becuase someone asked a question.

You could switch it no problem, see what I’m saying.

Queenie knows it all.
It is acceptable, but it could be better. Work on it some more.
