Can anyone tell me why a theater terms the audience “the house” and how it originated?

Sorry for not being more specific before. But I need to know how the term “house” came to be.

Webster offers nine variations of the meaning of house. It includes theatrical audience without explanation. My guess is that the atmosphere in a theatre depends not on the number of people in the audience but the extent to which the space (house) is fully occupied as in “full” or “empty” house.

Somewhat analogous is the use of the term “gate” for the paying spectators at an outdoor sporting event.
