Brackets. [ ]..why??

I’ve always noticed this and would always wonder but then forget to look up. What do the brackets mean actually? [ ]

In sentences why do people use them? Eg: “Mike Stone [must] die”. OR “[He] had become liberace’.

brackets are usually used inside of a sentence that already has a parenthesis. so it would look like (mike stone [must] die) or something. they can also be used in an interview when they try to make the sentence more understandable. ex: [in everyday life] she does not wish to pursue her career.

I almost agree with the first answer.

In the examples you gave, the brackets indicate that the words within them have been changed from the original — but still means the same as the original. Instead of “he” the person probably used someone’s name and there was a reason not to use the name in the publication.

Square brackets usually mark an edit that was used to change wording in direct quotes while indicating that a change has in fact been made.

For example, if in an interview I said “John Smith is a terrible human being. I saw him purposefully steal from a charity jar” the editor may feel that my opinion of John Smith as a person is irrelevant and simply print “I saw [John Smith] steal from a charity jar” and still attribute the quote to me.

They are used, in the instances you are referring to, to further illustrate what was implied in a quote. For example, the quote may have been exactly spoken as “He must die!” but no one reading it woud know who…so, brackets are inserted to define the “who” in question, “He [Mike Stone] must die!”

Brackets are also used inside a parenthetical expression. (I wasn’t sure you would know this [or anything for that matter] but figured I should tell you.)

The editor inserted the word in brackets to make the quote more understandable or concise.

It means that the person being quoted didn’t actually use that word. It was just used by the writer for the sake of clarity.
